Track description

Here you'll find a short description of the track between the different checkpoints in the of700. Please note that altitude differential of the race features 11,780 metres of vertical climb. This includes the prologue with it's 900metres climb completed aprox. an hour by the winning team.

 

Alta - Sørstraumen

 

Pursuit starting sequence from downtown Alta, onwards to Gakori elementary school. There's a tractor road from the school in fairly light terrain with some short stretches of marshes.

Tarmac road from Eiby to Gampvannslia.

There's a cart road leading up Gampvannslia to Badderen. The terrain isn't very techincally demanding. The track is on mainly dry road, of which 2km are marsh areas. The terrain is steep at first, but when you get to the hilly part it's possible to retain high speeds several stretches of the track. Coming down towards Baddern you ride on steep and rocky tracks demanding high technical skills. This area offers a spectacular view of the Troms alps, showing off some of the breathtaking  scenery offroadfinnmark has to offer.

Sørstraumen - Biedjovagge

 

A dirt road leads from Sørstraumen to Kvænangsbotn, followed by a tractor road towards Abojavre. The Kvænangsbotn-Abojavre stretch is only 20km long and offers a 920 metres vertical climb. This ascent and the serpentine road has a Swiss alp feel to it. The tree line is at only 400m and the landscape is wild and rugged. The last 15km towards Abojavre are on a rocky dirt road with hardly any climb at all.

There's a cart road from Abojavre to the old mines in Biedjovagge. This area offers some intense climbs and some technical low speed rocky paths. There are also some marshes to be traversed. The terrain changes from demanding rocky mountain paths to an open mountain plateau singletrack allowing higher speed.

Biedjovagge- Kautokeino

 

Leaving the Biedjovagge asphalt road we enter onto an easy path to Reisavann.

We follow the old "Nordkalottleden" leaving Reisavann. It's an old road that was used by tour mail carriers, travelers and officials back in the day. It turns into a path it's difficult to distinguish, and you have to rely on old orange markings painted on rocks and your GPS/maps. The first 10km are slow going due to the stretches you need to get off your bike to cross some hills and marshes. Finally the path becomes percieveable and turns into a cart road leading to the asphalt road.

We stay on the E6 northbound to Mieron.

After Mieron we leave the E6 and follow a dirt road to RV 93.

Masi - Suossjavri

 

After a short stretch of dirt road, we continue on a cart road that turns into a path. The first section offers quite a few metres of climbing. Next up is another old mail carrier road, marked with red T's. This stretch of road offers fair quality singletrack and some marsh crossings. After about 20km we reach the Raggisjokka river. It's got a strong current, so crossing it will get you soaking wet. Next up is the Raggis farm square with it's beautiful old buildings. Make sure you keep a keen eye on your GPS and maps, there are many small footpaths and tracks in the area.

Leaving Raggis we head south towards RV 92. This stretch of the track contains another river crossing and a marsh sporting a 200m long timber bridge. The rest of the trail is mainly on moraine ridges.

When the RV 92 is reached, we stay on it eastbound to Suossjavri.

Suossjavri - Nedre Mollisjok

 

Leaving Suossjavri we go south after the asphalt road towards Cuovdattmuotki.

From Cuovdattmuotki to the Nedre Mollisjok mountain cabin we find one of the best stretches of singletrack for high speed track racing.

Nedre Mollisjok - Ravnastua

 

The locals calls this area "Hundvidda" which translates to desolate mountain plateau. The nature being stark, relentless and harsh, you must be prepared for low speeds on very technically demanding tracks. Some riders will probably have to walk through some of the most technically difficult areas here.

We leave Ravnastua on a cart road going all the way down to Assebakte. Some stretches offer fast technical riding.

Karasjok - Valjok

 

Leaving the asphalt we enter onto a cart road that turns into a path. It's at times so indiscernible only the GPS/maps will guide you. This is only a few hundred metres though, you'll then enter back onto paths of fair quality and cart roads.

Valjok - Skoganvarre

 

Leaving Valjok, we head out on a dirt road northbound pararel with the Valjokka river. After crossing the river there's a steep climb. Most of this track is low-speed technical path. Up on the mountain plateau there's a cart road. You leave the cart road to follow a clear path along old phone line posts. We stay on this clearly visible track a few kilometres before entering onto another overgrown path.

At this point the race is in a very demanding terrain, marshes, thicket and undergrowth takes it's toll on the riders. The GPS log is crucial to guide the team to the shortest path, while the map is imperative to lead the riders to the path as it appears ahead. The path clears up eventually, becoming more percieveable and rideable.

The final half of this stretch offers singletrack with fast and technical steep downhills, rocky areas and some creeks to be traversed.

The last few kilometres towards Skoganvarre, there are cart roads and asphalt.

Skoganvarre - Jotka ved vei

 

This is another demanding stretch of track that includes more than 1300 metres of vertical climb. The nature is spectacular, this part of the race is truly unforgettable. After 18km we reach the small mountain lake Leavnjas.

Along the shoreline the path is partially gone, percieveable again at the west end of the lake.

The track is now on an open mountain plateau terrain dominated by long, modest ascension. The ride down to Øvre Stabbursdalen is steep, but from Stabbursdalsvannet the track leaves the marked path and go onto a southbound cart road. The last distance towards Bojobæski is a partially indiscernible path, the GPS and maps are vital here.

Going back up onto the mountain plateau leaving Bojobæski there are some rough climbs in a very technically demanding terrain. On the mountain plateau the path is of fair quality permitting higher speeds all the way down to a asphalt road.

Jotka ved vei - Jotka

 

We leave the asphalt road shortly after the checkpoint and follow a footpath/bike path of fair quality to Jotka mountain cabin. This stretch of road starts with a climb, then turns into a cart road. A quick and steep decent takes us down to the mountain cabin.

Jotka - Sorrisniva

 

The track now follows an old mail carrier road southbound towards Iesjavrre. After about 10km, we leave the mail carrier road and enter a path westbound towards the powerplant.

On the tractor road from the powerplant, there's a short stretch of asphalt before we continue along an old cart road.

The track follows a cart road along a rigde all the way to the Bollo cabin village.

There's a tractor road through Bollo and some path stretches leading to a dirt road to the Detsika slate mine. Leaving Detsika we're following an old partially overgrown cart road down to the Alta River. We pass the Sorrisniva tourist park.

Sorrisniva - Alta

 

Leaving the tourist park we follow the road crossing the Alta River. Here we'll experience the Alta River fishing spots and the quiet exitement of the hunt. This area offers some of the best singletrack areas in Alta. We cross the Eiby River bridge, and follow the RV 93 a short stretch before going back down to the river and more singletrack paths till the Ovre Alta camping site.

The last stretch towards the finish line continues along the Alta River after having crossed the Øvre Alta bridge (Forbygningen). The track continues along dirt roads and paths to the Kronstad part of Alta town. The final stretch of the track offers some technical challenging areas and a narrow path through dense forrest vegetation. We follow "Byløypa" (downtown ski/bike trail) with partial asphalt/dirt road in the forrest.
