Equipment

GPS and accessories:

All participants must have a GPS unit of their own.
  • The GPS must be capable of downloading and displaying a topographical map
  • The GPS must be possible to mount on the bicycle's top tube or handlebar. Since some stages demand GPS orientation in order to follow the trajectory, a GPS mounting device comes in very handy.
  • Riders should make sure to carry sufficient battery supplies in the backpack to last until the next checkpoint. They also need to pack enough batteries and/or battery booster in their support bags, which are transported between checkpoints, to cover the total need of power for the GPS devices.
  • Riders should bring a compass to navigate using maps in case the GPS fails.

Helmet

Helmet approved by NCF/UCI

Compulsory equipment in the backpack:

All riders:

  • Effective mosquito- and weather protection: mosquito hat/head net, mosquito repellent and full-body shell clothing (windproof and water resistant). The shell should not be a tight fit, to provide both mosquito protection and an isolating air layer. We also require that riders carry some insulating clothing in the backpack to protect against cold temperatures: a layer of dry synthetic underwear or an equivalent will be enough.
  • Sufficient food supplies
  • Matches or a lighter (packed in a waterproof bag/container)

At least one of the riders in every team needs to bring:

  • Emergency first aid equipment: tape, bandages, a one-man package, small scissors or a knife, rescue film
  • A loaded cell phone
  • GPS and batteries (we strongly recommend mounting the GPS onto the bicycle frame)
  • Compass and maps (maps will be handed out by the race administration before the race starts)

Recommended equipment in the team bag

  • One or two spare tires
  • 3 tubes
  • A chain cutter and a spare chain (possibly extra chain links)
  • Reparation tools:  small tweezers/multi-tools, umbrako screws, screwdrivers, strong tape, strings, a strong cord
  • A pump / air cartridge
  • Essential spare parts (e.g. brake pads, brake wire, gear wire)
  • An elastic cord for towing team mates
  • Gear lever / dropout (+ spare rear gear)

Compulsory equipment in the mobile depot

For the of700 contestants: All riders must bring 3 bags. Two small ones (no. 1 and 2) with the most nescessary thing, and a big one (no. 3) which will be available at the mandatory checkpoints. If you plan to sleep on a matress, bag number 3 should contain bed liner/sleeping bag and pillow (or a sheet, a quilt and a pillow).

For the of300 contestants: All riders must bring 1 bag which will be available at the mandatory checkpoint. It must contain bed liner/sleeping bag and a pillow. (or a sheet, a quilt and a pillow)

For the 5 days stage race: Bring 1 bag containing bed liner/sleeping bag (or a sheet, a quilt and a pillow). The bag will await you at every checkpoint.

  • Clean bicycle clothing (we recommend changing clothes a few times on the way)
  • Toiletries (shampoo, toothpaste, creams for treating blisters, ibuprofen etc.)
  • Towels
  • Individual items
  • Individual nutrients, such as power bars etc.
  • Mosquito repellents (oils, lotions, spray, serviettes)
  • 2-4 spare tubes
  • 1-2 spare tires
  • Brake liquid
  • Brake pads / brake discs
  • Spare water bottles (empty)
  • Spare drop-outs

Voluntary: Bring an extra pair of shoes, spare brakes, spare crankshafts and a spare seat and seat post, to be transported in mobile bags. It is also possible to hand this bag over to the Technical Resource Car, which follows the race closely. The bags and the Technical Resource Car are only accessible at the checkpoints. Support is not available at any points other than the checkpoints. Any infringement of this rule will cause time penalties or disqualification.

The Technical Resource Car

The Technical Resource Car follows the race leaders and carries bulkier equipment such as spare bicycles and wheels. If you need assistance, the Technical Resource unit will leave the equipment you require for you at the checkpoint. This unit will do its utmost to assist teams in repairing bicycles. The race leaders will be prioritized. You may deliver spare bicycles, wheels etc. to the Technical Resource Car, which follows the front of the race as closely as possible. Riders will carry the Technical unit's contact telephone number to order essential equipment at the next checkpoint.

Equipment at checkpoints

All teams must report twice at all checkpoints, on arrival and before departure.

At the checkpoints there will be tools and a supply of frequently used spare parts. If your own supply runs out you can purchase 1st aid equipment, tires, tubes, chains etc. from the race administration. We will make sure that the checkpoint staff will keep essential reparation equipment available.

The teams are not allowed to receive additional external support outside the checkpoints.

First aid

All checkpoint personell and ATV drivers are trained in first aid and will all be equipped with first aid kits.

Food

of700: At most checkpoints, the riders are offered a hot meal, drink and bread/breadspreads for sandwhiches. The hot meal is a dinner dish enriched with fats and proteins, that comes in approx. 1lbs/500gr servings. In addition, we offer breadspreads, bananas and peanuts, lemonade, milk and juice at the various checkpoints. The riders may pack lunches to eat in between checkpoints. At the Mollisjok and Ravnastua checkpoints, the riders can bring a hot meal serving from the prev. checkpoint and reheat it on site. As a part of the full support package offroadfinnmark offers, the main idea is that the participants eat what they want. Any special dietary needs however, must be covered in full by the participant in question.

Maps

At each checkpoint we'll provide you with a new map of the next stage. this means you'll have to report at the checkpoint whether you want to eat or not. The maps have been numbered and marked to make it easy to find the right one.

Bicycles

Preferably, the competitors should compete on a full-suspension mountain bike or a very good trail bike. It's also possible to use a hard tail with a Cane Creek suspension seat post.
